What is a Book Note?
A book note, like a book review, briefly describes the content, method, and theory of the featured book. Its primary purpose is to inform potential readers about what the author has set out to do in the book. The reviewer should be as clear and concise as possible, aiming to adequately cover the necessary information in no more than 400 words.
General Guidelines for Writing a Book Note
A book note should include two to three sentences covering each of nine points. The first five points should be as objective as possible and include
- The focus of the book
- The goals of the book
- The author’s basic arguments
- The style the author uses to present arguments
- The authors targeted readership
The second half of the book note, however, can and–even should–allow for the reviewer’s own opinion and evaluation of the book, answering questions like
- Does the author succeed in the goals outlines by the reviewer?
- Why or why isn’t the book innovative or otherwise noteworthy?
- Are there inconsistencies in the author’s arguments
- Is the book well written?
